Romanian PM, before Nokia announcement: High risk of multinationals leaving Romania

“Nokia's decision to close down the Jucu factory by the end of the year is strictly managerial, part of its survival strategy. It sells fewer cheap phone in Europe and more in Asia. It has lost the competition on smartphones to iPhones on the EU market. It has closed down factories in the US, Germany, and now it closes the one in Romania,' Vass explained.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc met Nokia representatives and asked whether the Romanian Government could do anything to stop closing the factory. “The answer was adamant: No. […] So let's not turn into politics something which is purely economic,” said Vass.

The Government was informed about Nokia's decision the day before it was announced to the employees and the media. The Government has six months to find compensation solutions for Cluj, according to Vass.

Commentators have said Nokia could have left due to the lack of road infrastructure. Vass however said she doubts Nokia's leaving would have anything to do with the lack of proper roads.
