Romanian PM leaves for Brussels after Constitutional Court says president should represent Romania at EC meeting

28 June 2012

Romanian prime Minister Victor Ponta (in picture) left for Brussels on Thursday morning (June 28 ), after the Constitutional Court decided the country's president should represent Romania at the European Council meeting in Brussels on June 28 and 29.

Ponta took the Foreign Affairs and the European Affairs ministers with him to Brussels. He is yet to give details about his agenda in Brussels. The PM said the Constitutional Court is biased, as most of the judges favor the President.

He also argued that the European Council agenda includes issues that should be addressed by a country's Government and that Romania should be very well represented and have a clear position.

The Constitutional Court decision came after the President and the Prime Minister had quarreled over who should attend the Council Meeting, and the President finally took the issue to the Constitutional Court. The court ruled that the president could delegate attendance to the Prime Minister. The President is yet to leave the country or announce his plans for the two days of the EC summit.
