Romanian PM no longer wishes to withdraw from politics this fall
After previously saying he was considering leaving politics this year, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta changed his mind – he no longer plans to withdraw from politics this fall. Appearing at a TV show on Antena 3, Ponta said his statement was more meant for his own party, the Social Democrat Party, and aimed at reminding them they should not lower their efforts. “I would only withdraw from politics if the project I am heading fails,” he said.
The PSD is yet to announce his candidate for the presidential elections towards the end of the year, with Ponta one of the 'maybes' in the race. The PM himself is yet to announce whether he plans to run for presidency or not this year. His previous statements however pointed out that it was too early for him to run for this seat.
“I will run for presidency if I will not fully trust that the Social Liberal Union USL plan to change president Basescu's regime can be a wining formula,” said Ponta.
