The proposal to close hypermarkets during weekends is a stupid measure for Romania, said Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Nobody stands to gain from such a measure: nor the employees who are paid double on weekends, nor the consumers who can shop at the end of the week, he added, reports local Mediafax.

Keeping the hypermarkets open during weekends helps consumption and jobs, the Prime Minister said. He asked the Government not to approve this proposal.

Two Liberal members of the Parliament have initiated this project that would see hypermarkets close during weekends. The traditional retail would receive a boost, and consumers would spend more time with their family or outdoors, the initiators argued.
