Romanian policeman gets jail sentence for driving without a license for 20 years

09 January 2015

A policeman in Buzau county, in eastern Romania, was convicted to three years in jail, no parole, for driving his personal car as well as the police car on public roads without having a driver’s license. The decision is not final, according to Mediafax.

The man, who served as chief of local police in the village of Merei, 17 kilometers away from Buzau, was caught in March 2013, following an internal investigation of the Buzau county police.

He had been driving without a license since July 1993. He was also convicted for false statements, as he said at some point that he had a driver’s license but that he had lost the document.

Meanwhile, the man retired from the police on medical reasons, as he knew he would have been excluded from the police in case he got convicted.
