Romanian presents his wooden car at the Frankfurt Motor Show

21 September 2015

A Romanian managed to capture the attention of the Frankfurt Motor Show’s visitors with a wooden car of his own creation.

Szabo Peter, a carpenter and Opera singer from the village of Corunca, near Targu Mures, worked three years to build the car, which he named Julia, after his wife.

He carved the body out of ash wood to make it resistant. He adapted the chassis and the V6 engine of an old Ford Taunus to fit his car, and the seats he took from a Ford Probe and had them re-upholstered by another local craftsman, according to ProMotor.ro. The windshield came off a Mercedes-Benz Cobra and cut to fit.

A German company equipped the car with electronic systems and navigation. The same German company took the car to Frankfurt Motor Show and put it on display.

The Germans were impressed with the car, which they consider one-of-a-kind. The company’s representatives saw it by chance when they came to Romania and stayed a few nights at a guesthouse Szabo Peter owns in Cocunca. “We don’t think there is someone in Germany who would make such a car,” the German firm’s representatives said, according to local news site punctul.ro.

A few years ago, Szabo Peter also built a wooden carriage, which is used mainly at weddings in Targu Mures.
