Romanian president calls for Schengen area accession based on EU treaty conditions
Romania demands that its Schengen accession consider the conditions agreed through European Union treaties, President Traian Basescu said Thursday during a meeting with ambassadors of EU countries.
The president pointed out that Romania cannot be discriminated against and highlighted there is no sign indicating the country might generate risks regarding illegal migration.
Basescu said Romania, as any other EU member state, is interested in ensuring the security of the Schengen Area borders. He stressed that the country "observed and will continue to meet its obligations" to be allowed to Schengen. He said Romania's major objective is to join the Schengen Area.
