Romanian President criticizes EC’s mandatory quotas for refugees

11 September 2015

President Klaus Iohannis criticized the European Commission for not having consulted with the member states on the number of refugees that each country could receive. He said that Romania didn’t agree with the mandatory quotas announced by EC President Jean Claude Juncker two days ago.

According to the EC’s proposal, Romania should take in over 6,300 refugees whereas the Romanian officials have said repeatedly that the country could only accommodate some 1,700 refugees. The EC calculated these quotas in a bureaucratic way, Iohannis said.

He also announced that the Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea would represent Romania at the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council’s meeting on September 14, in Brussels, where the member states will vote the European Commission’s project on the mandatory quotas. The Interior Minister’s mandate is to vote against these quotas, Iohannis said.
