Romanian President favors Liberal Government led by former Justice Minister

23 January 2015

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis would prefer a Liberal Government, led by former Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu. The president himself is a Liberal, and run the National Liberal Party for a short period before becoming the head of state.

Iohannis expressed his preference for cabinet after saying the relationship with the current Government led by Social Democrat Victor Ponta, was a 'normal, institutional one', according to Mediafax.

“This Government was here when I became President, I haven’t chosen them, nor rejected them. Institutionally, this is not the President’s job, but I don’t see how I can implement my 10-year vision for Romania with this Government,” said Iohannis at local TV station Realitatea TV.

“I want a National Liberal Party (PNL) Government, but we have to see how, what the best solution is and what is possible,” he said. In Romania, the President can’t change the Government.

When asked for a possible Liberal Prime Minister replacement, Iohannis named former Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu, whom his party designated to create a new cabinet after the Liberal and Democrat Liberal Party merger.
