Romanian President joins presidential candidate and former PM at Bucharest beerhouse

29 September 2014

Romanian President Traian Basescu has met on Sunday, September 28, with leaders of the Popular Movement Party PMP, including presidential candidate Elena Udrea, and with former Prime Minister Emil Boc, at a beerhouse in Bucharest’s Herastrau Park, the newly opened Beraria H. He sat down with PMP repesentatives and left after about an hour, reports local Mediafax.

The meeting took place after the rally organized by PMP in Bucharest, between Sala Palatului and Victoriei Square. During the march, PMP president Elena Udrea, who is also running for presidency in this year’s elections, and other leaders of the party, gave speeches in support of Udrea’s candidacy and against the current government.

According to Udrea, PMP invited President Basescu at the beerhouse. “We invited him because he called to congratulate us for the event and for all the effort we make to fight the Ponta government and the PSD. And so we invited him to come here, because we are dozens, even hundreds of supporters of the President,” she said, cited by Mediafax.

Elena Udrea added that the Romanian President will also attend the launch of her political program for the presidential elections. Udrea and Basescu have been working together for years, ever since he was the Bucharest mayor. He recently offered her public support in the race for the presidential seat he is currently occupying. Basescu himself cannot run for president anymore, as he reached the allowed limit by law, 2 mandates.

Udrea is one of the 14 candidates at this year’s presidential elections to be organized in Romania on November 2.
