Romanian President promulgates law on voting by mail
Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law on voting by mail on Thursday, November 19.
“The vote by mail law was a goal assumed by President Klaus Iohannis from the beginning of his mandate. This bill is a legislative act that the entire society has been expecting and ensures the premises for respecting all Romanians’ fundamental rights to vote, wherever they are across the world,” reads a statement of the Presidential Administration.
The Constitutional Court decided on Wednesday, November 18, that the law was constitutional, rejecting the challenge of unconstitutionality filed by a number of 31 senators and 50 deputies from several parties.
The idea that Romanians should be able to vote by mail no matter where they live came after the 2014 presidential elections when thousands of Romanians living abroad didn’t get to vote in the first and second rounds of the elections because of too long queues at the voting wards.
