Romanian presidential candidate heard by anticorruption prosecutors a day before official campaign start

02 October 2014

Romanian Presidential candidate and former minister Elena Udrea was heard by anticorruption prosecutors for two hours last night (October 1), as witness in a corruption case focusing on the Piatra Neamt mayor Gheorghe Ştefan.

Prosecutors wanted to know how Udrea handed out financing from the Development Ministry, which she run until 2012.

Some of this funding went to the Piatra Neamt mayor. Everything was done legally, says Udrea, who further said she did not believe in coincidences. The hearing happened just before the official start of the presidential campaign, due to start tomorrow - Friday, October 3.

But most presidential candidates have already been campaigning in various ways. “I had to come over quickly – to the anticorruption prosecutors – because as I understood, the file had to be closed,” said Elena Udrea.
