Romanian presidential candidate wants to give up on immunity

07 November 2014

Presidential candidate Klaus Iohannis, who will go against the current Prime Minister Victor Ponta in the second round of the elections, on November 16, said the first thing he’d do as president would be to give up on the president’s immunity, as well as on immunity for members of the Parliament.

He added discussions with political parties and with the task force which drafts the Constitution modernization project are of course needed to accomplish this.

“Everyone understand and agrees there needs to be a sort of protection of having a political opinion and I completely agree, and I believe everyone agrees MPs should not be sent to court for their political options, but beyond this, it is intolerable that justice is blocked because of immunity procedures,” said Klaus Iohannis.

Iohannis came second in the first round of the presidential elections, on November 2, and is 10% behind current Prime Minister Victor Ponta. In the last few days, both candidates managed to get some support from the other candidates who are out of the race.
