Romanian prosecutors go after doctors, pharmacists who issued fake prescriptions

Romanian prosecutors and policemen conducted several searches on Tuesday morning (May 20) in Bucharest, Sibiu, Dolj, and Ilfov counties, including at the Fundeni Hospital in Romania’s capital, as 13 doctors and pharmacists are suspects of having issued fake prescriptions. The damage in this case amounts to EUR 3.5 million, reports local Mediafax.

Three doctors allegedly issued 1,100 fake prescriptions for cancer and hematologic drugs, while a pharmacy chain has fraudulently reimbursed money from the Bucharest Health Insurance House (CASMB).

Prosecutors started in May the criminal case against 10 people suspected of tax evasion, money laundering, forgery and use of forgery, according to a statement of the Bucharest Court Prosecutors.

In this case, prosecutors and policemen have concluded 26 searches on Tuesday, in Bucharest and Sibiu, Dolj and Ilfov counties. The searches were conducted at companies, doctors and pharmacists homes, as well as at the Fundeni Hospital in Bucharest.

According to sources close to the investigation, cited by Mediafax, a total of EUR 100,000, USD 140,000 and RON 250,000 were found at one doctor’s house during the searches, while one of the pharmacists had RON 100,000 and EUR 23,000.
