Romanian public television in talks to re-broadcast Euronews programs in Romanian

03 October 2012

The Romanian state television TVR wants to re-broadcast the European channel Euronews in Romanian, and has started talks with Euronews, according to TVR president Claudiu Săftoiu.

Euronews, whose news and programs director is Romanian Lucian Sarb, will be re-broadcasted on the frequency used by the defunct TV station TVR Info, which was recently closed down in a restructuring move.

Re-broadcasting Euronews in Romania would only come after both personnel and activity at TVR are restructured, which should be finalized at the end of November this year.

The media partnership with Euronews would mean splitting TVR Info between Euronews and the production of informative shows by the News Department of TVR, which would not require increasing the number of journalists. Saftoiu thus wants to revive TVR Info and continue its informative programming.

Euronews, a multilingual news channel created in 1993, is headquartered in Lyon-Ecully, France. Romania's TVR has been a member and shareholder of Euronews since 2004. The station currently broadcasts in 155 countries in 11 languages simultaneously – Arabian, English, French, Italian, German, Russia, Portuguese, Spanish, Farsi, Ukrainian and Turkish. Romanian Lucian Sarb has been editorial director with Euronews since 2009.

Via the contract signed with Euronews, TVR would receive the international version of the news segment and be allowed to translate it into Romanian and broadcast it. TVR, with a total loss of some EUR 145 million, is currently under a restructuring process. It has already closed down the TVR Cultural and TVR Info channels.
