Romanian returned from Nigeria to be tested for possible Ebola infection

30 October 2014

A sixty-year old Romanian, who recently returned from Nigeria, was admitted on Thursday, October 30, to the Matei Bals Infectious Disease Institute in Bucharest, under Ebola suspicion, the hospital’s manager Adrian Streinu Cercel said.

“There a very low probability that he is in fact infected with Ebola, as Nigeria was declared an Ebola-free country by the World Health Organisation,” Streinu Cercel added, according to Mediafax.

The man, who returned recently from working on a boat in Nigeria, went to a hospital in Constanta complaining of high fever and nausea. He was sent to Bucharest to be tested for possible Ebola infection. Streinu Cercel said that the man is only suspected of Ebola, but that all necessary isolation measures will be taken until the doctors will make a clear diagnosis.

The Matei Bals Infectious Disease Institute has a whole floor isolated and prepared to test patients suspected of Ebola infection. No Ebola case has been registered in Romania so far.
