Romanian shipyard makes ferries for Canadian authorities
Damen Galati, one of Romania’s largest shipyards, inaugurated the second ferryboat it built for the Canadian Newfoundland and Labrador province authorities.
The ferryboat built in Romania, which was named “Legionnaire” will carry passengers and vehicles between the Bell Island and Portugal Cove, located on Canada’s Eastern coast, reports local Agerpres. Damen Galati launched a similar ferryboat in April 2015.
The ships are 81 meters long and 17 meters wide and can reach a speed of 14 knots. They can carry 200 passengers and about 60 vehicles.
The Damen Bergum shipyard in the Netherlands designed the ships and created their main elements, but the Damen Galati shipyard has built and equipped them.
The Romanian shipyard, which is part of Dutch group Damen, expects to deliver a total of 25 ships this year, the same as last year. The yard also builds special ships that place cables on the bottom of the sea as well as yachts.
Damen Galati had a turnover of EUR 112 million and a net profit of EUR 7 million, in 2014. It had more than 2,300 employees.
