Romanian song of the week: 'Apa' by Loredana feat. Cabron

27 September 2012

Loredana Groza, Romania's answer to Madonna, who manages to reinvent herself with every new album and keep the pace with what's happening on the international music scene, recently launched a new song called 'Apa' (The water). We liked its uptempo, funky beat and think it will be on heavy rotation on many radio stations in Romania in the coming months.

For this song, Groza worked with Romanian hip-hop artist Cabron, who raps some of the words from Loredana's 1998 song “Buna seara, iubito”, in which some of the lyrics are recited by actor Ion Caramitru. The lyrics, which in the original song were romantic and simple, are updated to a more commercial, today feel.

The song 'Apa's lyrics are interspersed with meaningless, assorted sounds, of the kind that have been making plenty of hits on Youtube lately (see the Brazilian Michel Telo singing 'Bara Bara Bere Bere' and Joao Lucas e Marcelo singing Tchu Tcha Tcha).

Loredana’s musical career spans over 20 years. She started singing at 3 and became famous at 16, when she won an important local singing competition. A singer and song writer, she has performed and recorded everything from pop and electronika to gypsy spirituals, traditional Romanian music and alternative rock, and has received numerous local and international awards. She was a the Playboy magazine cover girl in 2000.
