Romanian teenager stars in Cannes – winning film

A 13-year old Romanian actress has the leading role in the film Le Meraviglie/The Wonders, which won the grand jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival last weekend.

Alexandra Lungu plays Gelsomina, a young Italian girl who lives at a farm with her parents and three younger sisters. Their family life is shaken up when a young criminal, Martin, arrives, and when a new TV game starts shooting in the region.

The film is an Italian-Swiss-German co-production. It was written and directed by young Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher and it also stars Monica Bellucci, Sam Louwyck, Alba Rohrwacher and Sabine Timoteo.

The 13-year old Alexandra Lungu is at her first appearance in film. She has been living with her family in Italy since 2006.
