Romanian treasure hunt film gets special Cannes prize
The jury at this year’s Cannes film festival were so impressed with Romanian Corneliu Porumboiu’s film ‘The treasure’, that they created a special prize for it. Thus came to life the Un Certain Talent award, within the Un Certain Regard section, where the feature – length film had been selected.
Porumboiu got the prize for the ‘masterful narration’ of this treasure hunt. The Romanian director is no stranger to the Un Certain Regard section, as he won the jury prize in 2009 with his film Politist, Adjectiv (Policeman, adjective).
The Treasure stars both professional and amateur actors, and its script is signed by the director himself.
The Romanian movie Comoara focuses on two men who go through several surprising events in their atempt to discover a treasure buried in one of the character’s grandparents' garden. In Romania, the film will premiere on May 29.
The film was financed by the Romanian National Cinema Center, with some RON 1.5 million – or some EUR 340,000.
The Cannes Film Festival took place between May 13 and 24 this year. With Isabella Rossellini (filmmaker - United States, Italy) as its President, the Un Certain Regard jury was comprised of Haifaa al-Mansour (director - Saudi Arabia), Panos H. Koutras (director - Greece), Nadine Labaki (director, actress - Lebanon) and Tahar Rahim (actor - France). The full results of the section are here.
