Romanian villager finds 3rd century Dacian ceramic jar while working the field

17 March 2014

A villager in Central Romania has discovered a ceramic jar dating from the Roman period while ploughing his field.

The man from the Râu de Mori village in Hunedoara county discovered the jar while working the field at the foot of the Retezat mountain, and called the authorities from the Deva Museum to check the discovery.

Specialists found the jar was part of a tomb dating back form the 2nd - 3rd century AC, and contained human ashes. The tomb was located in the Eastern part of the Sarmizegetusa Dacian Colony, close to an imperial road coming from the Danube, and going further to the north of the Dacia province.

The ceramic jar, now under a conservation process, will enter the patrimony of the Museum in Sarmizegetusa village, close to the ruins of the Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa citadel.
