Romanian website Our Heritage catalogues 2,300 Transylvanian monuments

20 November 2013

A website with information about 2,300 monuments in Romania's central region of Transylvania has been launched by a local association in the town of Sibiu.

The portal Our Heritage so far lists only a part of the 8,100 existing monuments in the region, and will extend over three years.

It started in the beginning of 2013 with photographing and gathering information via field work done by historians, researchers and architects. (in picture, Bontida castle)

The project is an initiative of the Association for Embellishing the Sibiu City, and the focus was first on the monuments in Sibiu county, 1,000 of which are on the website already. The rest of the monuments are in Alba, Bistriţa-Năsăud, Braşov, Cluj, Covasna, Harghita, Hunedoara, Mureş and Sălaj counties.

The project benefited from support from the National Cultural Fund Administration, which covered much of the expenses.

The website, accesible via mobile and tablet as well as from PC, offers four search filters, via county, category, architecture, and patrimony. Users can also create routes and choose to display certain types of monuments along these routes.

For the time being the site is in Romanian only, but the creators are working on the English version as well.
