Romanian weightlifter fails drug test, will lose Olympic medal
Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sincraian, who won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics this summer, failed a doping test and will lose his Olympic medal, reports the local media.
Moreover, the Romanian Olympic Committee (COSR) risks a fine of EUR 100,000 from the International Olympic Committee.
A total of 96 athletes represented Romania at the Olympic Games organized in Rio this August. The country finished 47th in the country ranking at the 2016 Rio Olympics with one gold medal, one silver, and three bronze. This was Romania’s poorest result at the Olympic Games since the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.
Following Gabriel Sincraian’s drug test, Romania will remain with just four medals.
Romania’s team won the final of the women’s epee competition and the first gold medal for Romania at the Rio Olympics on August 11. Then, Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau won silver in the men’s doubles tennis competition, Gabriel Sincraian got the bronze in the men’s 85kg weightlifting competition, and Romania’s rowing team also won the bronze.
Albert Saritov, a naturalized Romanian of Chechen descent, won the bronze medal in the men’s freestyle wrestling competition – 97 kg category.
