There is a new trend in Romanian work migration abroad, according to Radu Pojoga, regional director of money-transfer platform MoneyGram for South-Eastern Europe. People who previously went to work in Spain, Italy, Greece and other Southern countries start going more to Europe’s northern countries, such as Germany, UK, Sweden, or Norway.

“Romanians go where the money is,” said Pojoga, cited by local Mediafax.

Most money transferred last year to Romania came from Italy, with USD 1 billion, followed by Spain, with USD 792 million, Germany, with USD 451 million, according to the Romanian National Bank’s data presented by MoneyGram.

The main countries which receive money transfers from Romania were Spain (USD 127 million), Moldova (USD 109 million), and Italy (USD 71 million).
