Romanian workers have the highest risk of poverty in the EU

31 August 2012

Romania has the highest poverty risk rate among its working class in the European Union, with 17.3 percent of its workers at risk of poverty, according to Labor Minister Mariana Campeanu. The country also ranks last on the continuing training for its 25 to 64 year old citizens.

For comparison, the risk rate for poverty in Finland and the Czech Republic is of 3.7 percent.

“The risk rate for poverty among those who work continuously increases. This is very worrying for Romania, because salaries are anyway low, and there are only few other possibilities to get revenues from other sources, while the gap between small and very high income increases on a daily basis,” said the Labor Minister.

A study recently carried by the Ministry shows only a quarter of Romanians believe they are well paid, while in Denmark, the ratio is of 63 percent.
