Romanian writer Ioana Parvulescu among winners of EU Prize for Literature this year
Romanian writer Ioana Parvulescu will be awarded the European Prize for Literature together with 11 other European writers.
The awards were already announced by European Commissioner for Education and Culture Androulla Vassiliou, but the awards ceremony will take place on November 26 in Brussels.
The 53-year old Romanian writer will receive the European recognition for her novel 'Life starts on Friday', (Viata incepe vineri) from 2009, which in 2011 also appeared under a Swedish translation.
Pârvulescu, who also teaches Modern Romanian at the University of Letters in Bucharest, has also been an editor of Romania Literara magazine for 18 years.
She wrote several collections of essays, many about long lost worlds such as 'A return to the Inter-war Bucharest' or 'In the intimacy of the 19th century', among others.
Her book 'Life Begins on Friday is a unique and charming journey into bygone times.
A young man is found lying unconscious on the outskirts of Bucharest. No one knows who he is and everyone has a different theory about how he ended up there,' according to the EU Prize for Literature presentation.
The EU Prize for Literature rewards the best new or emerging authors throughout Europe.
Organised by the European Commission in cooperation with the European Booksellers Federation, European Writers' Council and the Federation of European Publishers, the competition is open to authors in the 37 countries involved in the EU Culture Programme. The full list of winners this year is here.
