Romanian writer Norman Manea, foreign writers at Gaudeamus fair this week
Romanian-born writer Norman Manea (in picture), who lives in the United States, will attend the upcoming Gaudeamus book fair in Bucharest, which will take place at Romexpo between November 18 and 22. Manea will be one of the guests of honor of this year's edition, together with a group of foreign writers. Catherine Cusset and Marie Darrieussecq from France, as well as Sergio Romano, Bruno Mazzoni and Andrea G. Pinketts from Italy will also be guests of honor at Gaudeamus.
Jacques Dubois is the honorary president of the Gaudeamus book fair, which is dedicated to Belgium this year. Paul Emond, Didier Platteau, Emile Lansman, Bernard Debroux and Jean Auquier will also attend the event as special guests. Jacques Dubois is Professor Emeritus of Literature at the Université de Liège. He is also a Member of the Groupe µ. In 1983, he was the main editor of the Manifesto for Walloon culture.
Tickets for the Gaudeamus book fair cost RON 10 and are valid for the entire period of the fair. A single entry ticket is also available for RON 4. The fair will be open from 16,00 to 21,00 hours on Thursday, November 18, from 10,00 to 20,00 hours from November 19 to November 21, and from 10,00 to 16,00 hours during the last day, on November 22. The Romexpo center is located on 65-67 Marasti Blvd., near the Free Press Square.
Norman Manea is a Romanian-born writer who left Romania in 1986 and set up residence in the US, where he became writer in residence at several US universities. Until he was forced into exile, he published in Romania ten volumes of short fiction, essays and novels.
Most of his books were however published in Romania even before the fall of the communism. His recent books include a volume of essays, ‘Envelopes and Portraits’, a short fiction volume ‘Variations to a Self-Portrait’, and a novel called ‘The Lair’.
