Romanians can have their new electronic passports delivered home via courier

23 June 2014

Romanians can receive their new electronic passports at home, as authorities have introduced the option to mail the passport once done, rather than pick it up in person. However, those who want a new passport will  still have to submit the documents in person.

If they want the passport to be delivered via courier at home, Romanians will have to pay an extra RON 8.7 – some EUR 2. The passport will be delivered only to its holder, who will have to sign for it. The new delivery option is valid starting June 23, 2014.

The electronic passport is issued by request. Documents should be submitted to the local passport offices of the region where the applicant lives, for those who live in Romania, or to Romania’s diplomatic and consular missions for those who live abroad.

A passport is usually ready in 14 days for applicants who currently live in Romania. The documents needed to apply for a passport are: a valid ID card in original, the birth certificate in original, the previous passport (if the case), and the payment proof of passport issuance fees.

It costs RON 270 – or some EUR 61 to issue the electronic passport, and an extra RON 22 is charged as fees. The fees can be paid at CEC Bank units. Those who submit requests for passports abroad will have to pay the taxes and fees established by the respective diplomatic and consular missions.
