Romanians celebrate saints Mihail and Gavriil today

08 November 2011

The Orthodox Church celebrates the Mihail and Gavriil saints on Tuesday, November 8. It is also the name day for all Romanians named Mihai, Mihaela, Gabriel, Gabriela, Gabi.

The Romanian tradition goes that the two angels Mihai and Gavriil are always present in people’s lives, standing over people and forgiving their petty sins. It also goes that the angels guide the souls of the dead either to Heaven of Hell on November 8. Mihail is always seen as the angel who always fights the devils when they were trying to steal the Moon or the Sun.

The Saint Mihail and Gavriil day is also known as the ‘Summer of the winter’ – the last warm days until Christmas.
