24 January 2014

Romanians rank sixth in Europe on beer consumption, as well as on the number of jobs created by the brewery sector, according to data from Romania's Brewers Association.

The average consumption per inhabitant is of 90 liters a year, on a market which dropped in sales by about 8 percent in the first eight months of 2013, after the increase in excises. This means a Romanian drinks on average a glass of beer every day of the year.

With this average consumption however, Romanians are above the European average of 70 liters of beer a year. The Czechs, Austrians, Germans and Polish occupy the first positions in the ranking on beer consumption.

In Romania, about 76,700 people work in beer production, and the country lost some 14.6 percent of the jobs in the sector between 2008 and 2012, according to Constantin Bratu, the executive director of the Romania's Brewers Association. Even so, Romanian workers in beer production cover 4 percent of the 2 million jobs generated by this sector in Europe.

Romania's Brewers Association is made of five beer producers Bergenbier, Heineken, Romaqua, Ursus and United Romanian Breweries Bereprod, and a mini brewery – Clinica de bere.
