Romanians spend EUR 37 mln on domestic NYE holidays

05 January 2018

Over 167,000 Romanian tourists spent their New Year’s Eve holidays in local hotels and guest houses, 5.5% more than in the previous year. They spent almost EUR 37 million, 11% more than one year ago, as local holiday prices also increased, according to an analysis by the Federation of Employers in Romanian Tourism – FPTR.

“Although hotel operators expected the number of tourists on New Year’s Eve to be lower than last year, due to the lower purchasing power and the lack of snow, they had a pleasant surprise as local resorts were 5.5% fuller than last year,” according to a FPTR press release.

Romania has become the main holiday destination for Romanian tourists in recent years, according to FPTR first vice president Dragos Raducan.

Of the total number of tourists, 58,000 spent their New Year’s Eve in rural guest houses, up 5.5% versus last year. Meanwhile, the number of tourists in local spa and winter resorts went down compared to last year, due to the warm weather and lack of snow. Hotels in the main cities, however, drew more tourists, as did the accommodation units in the Danube Delta and at the seaside.

Overall, the average accommodation prices increased by 5% compared to last year.
