Romanians eat five times less fish than European average
Romanians eat between 4 and 4.5 kg of fish a year, five times less than the average among EU member states. Most of the fish consumed in Romania comes from imports – 80%, according to Gheorghe Vacaru, adviser with the Management Authority for Fisheries Operational Programme at the Agriculture Ministry.
“Before 1989, fish consumption in Romania was of 6-8 kg per capita a year, but 10 years after the Revolution, consumption dropped to 2 kg as Romanians started to feel more relaxed about other products. In the last 3-4 years, fish consumption varied between 3 and 4 kg, even 4.5 kg per capita a year […]. Last year, imports accounted for 87% of consumption,” said Vacaru, cited by local Agerpres.
Romania imports fish from Norway or South American countries, as well as from Greece, Italy, Turkey and Hungary.
