Only five out of one million Romanians own European patents registered at the European Patent Office – EPO, according to a Eurostat report.

By comparison, in the EU there are 111 patent holders for each one million citizens.

This partly reflects the low expenses for research and innovation in Romania, which only represent 0.48% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), compared with an EU average of GDP.
