Romania's Finance Ministry quits Government job to focus on party's activity during electoral year

06 February 2014

Romanian Finance Minister and vice – prime minister Daniel Chitoiu resigned on Thursday (February 6) from his government positions.

The news was confirmed by the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Crin Antonescu. Chitoiu said he plans to get more involved in the activity of his party PNL during the 2014 electoral year. He also said his government activity would not allow him to be secretary general of the PNL, a new function he was recently given. “I work 18 hours a day. There are no other reasons,” Chitoiu said.

The new names for the Finance Ministry and for the Domestic Affairs Ministry seat, which was left vacant earlier in January, will be announced on Friday, February 7.

Chitoiu's wife, who works for the Financial Supervisory Authority, is being investigated in a file involving trading influence and bribery, among others. More about this file, here.

This is the second ministerial resignation in Romania in the last two weeks, after the Domestic Affairs Minister also resigned recently.
