What do Romanians do on the Internet when at home?
Most of Romanian fixed Internet users, namely 90%, use the Internet at home to search for information, read the news, and keep up to date with recent events. Also, 77% of them use the fixed Internet to access social networks, according to a market study conducted by Romania’s communication authority ANCOM.
The reasons why Romanians use the fixed Internet at home may be split into four categories: information, communication, recreational activities, and electronic payments.
When it comes to communication, 75% of respondents use the fixed Internet at home to speak with family members or friends through instant messaging, and 71% use it to send and receive e-mails. In terms of recreational activities, 61% of Romanians use the fixed Internet at home to watch TV, video clips, and movies online, and 52% use it to play games online.
Only 39% of respondents use the fixed Internet at home for online shopping, and 22% use it for banking transactions and bill payments.
On average, a Romanian uses the fixed Internet at home for 24 hours a month. Three-quarters (74%) of the respondents use it daily or almost daily, 16% use it 2-3 times a week, and 4% use it once a week.
When at home, most Romanians (72%) access the fixed Internet from a computer/desktop, 61% use the Internet from a laptop/notebook, 43% use a smartphone to go online, and 32% use the Internet from a tablet. Only 9% of Romania’s households use a Smart TV to access the fixed Internet.
The research was conducted between October and November 2014, on a sample of more than 1,400 people.
