Samsung study: Romanians love technology but some tech terms confuse them

16 June 2016

Romanian users love technology, but some terms such as Cloud and Streaming confuse them, according to a study conducted by Samsung.

Slightly over 60% of the respondents to the survey say they use technology more than they did two years ago and 58% are pleased to use it. Moreover, only 16% said that they can’t keep up with the technology and 49% agree that the technological progress is inevitable, the study shows.

However, when asked how well they know the new technical terms, 67% of Romanians say they pretend to understand the terms and phrases they don’t actually know, 7% doing this several times a day. The terms most Romanians pretend to know are Cloud (28%), Emoji (27%), and Streaming (25%).

On the other hand, respondents aged between 16 and 34 are the ones who usually admit to not knowing a technical term.

“In Romania, most users use their smartphones daily, but the latest innovations such as the Internet of Things and Cloud still produce confusion among them,” said Monika Törökné Nagy, South East Europe Marketing Director, Samsung Electronics.

Almost 30% of Romanians pretend to know the terminology so they don't look foolish or ignorant in front of their colleagues, the study also shows. However, one of the consequences of misunderstanding technical language is the users’ inability to benefit from a service or a device to its full potential.

When it comes to what apps the Romanians find the most useful, 26% say that navigation and maps apps simplify their lives the most, while 22% choose the standard computer applications, and 13% prefer apps for photo cameras.

As an answer to this study, Samsung Electronics Europe will create "The Plain Tech Guide” to explain the latest terms and how they can improve one’s life.

The survey was conducted online between March 16 and April 1 on a sample of over 10,000 respondents from 18 European countries.

The Internet is not just a media channel but a utility for young Romanians
