Romanians pay near the EU average for clothes and electronics, but less for food

The prices in Romania for clothing, electronics and personal transport equipment are close to the European Union average, but Romanians pay less for food, drinks, tobacco, restaurant meals or hotel stays, according to the data published by Eurostat.

In 2010, price levels for consumer goods and services differed widely across Member States, Romania recording nearly the lowest level of 59 percent.

The price of food and non-alcoholic beverages is 67 percent of the EU average, while the price of alcohol and tobacco is 64 percent, this making Romania the country that has the cheapest food in EU, except for Bulgaria, where these prices are 66 percent of the EU average.

In Romania, clothing costs 94 percent of the EU average, while consumer electronics can be bought for 96 percent of the EU average. For restaurants and hotels, price variations were more significant, with price levels ranging from 45 percent of the average in Bulgaria to 153 percent of the average in Denmark, Romania’s prices being 50 percent of the EU average.
