Two out of three Romanians in rural areas don’t have running water
Little over 13.2 million people in Romania had access to running water in 2017, representing 67.5% of the resident population, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
In urban areas, 10.2 million people, namely 96.9% of the population living in cities, had running water, local Hotnews.ro reported. Meanwhile, in rural areas, only 3.04 million people, or 33.5% of the population in villages, had the access to this utility.
The situation is similar when it comes to indoor toilets. Almost 70% of the households in Romania have indoor toilets, but the percentage is higher in cities – 94% while in villages about six in ten households have toilets in the yard.
The numbers are slightly better for indoor bath/shower. About 71.4% of the households in Romania have such facilities, namely 94.2% of those located in urban areas and 45.8% of those in rural areas.
