Romanians use more electricity while the country's energy resources are slightly down
Romania's electricity consumption was 4.3 percent higher in the first eight months of the year than during the same period last year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. The population used 3.1 percent more electricity, while the public lightning use dropped by 3 percent.
The electricity consumption is one of the parameters which usually indicate the economic evolution of a country, an increase in the consumption indicating an increase in consumption and therefore a possible economic revival. On the other hand, ecology activists promote a lower energy consumption to save the world natural resources.
Romania's primary energy resources were down 1.1 percent in the first eight months, while the electricity resources increased by 1.5 percent. Primary energy resources featured 22 million tonnes equivalent petrol (tep), out of which local production made the bulk – 15 million tep.
The electricity resources made up 39 billion KWh, up 1.5 percent mainly due to imports. The resources came from thermal power plants – 17 billion KWh, hydro power plants – 13.6 billion KWh and nuclear power plants – 7.4 billion KWh.
