Romania’s Bucharest-Constanta highway to be finalized this June
Romanian Transport Minister, Alexandru Nazare recently said that the Sun Highway - which connects Bucharest and Constanta, will be finished in late June this year, after the two-lane Murfatlar-Medgidia section and the one-lane Medgidia - Cernavoda section are opened for traffic.
According to the Minister, work on the two sections is currently on schedule and if delayed, the constructor will receive a penalty. He also said that work between Murfatlar-Medgidia is 78 percent complete, while just 22 percent of the Medgidia - Cernavoda section is currently completed.
A 21-km section of the Sun Highway (Autostrada Soarelui- A2) to Mangalia, which bypasses the city of Constanta, was opened in late July last year.
In September 2011, construction companies Astaldi and Max Boegl won the auction to build the Cernavoda – Medgidia highway segment. The 20.5-km highway segment will be entirely completed in January 2013.
Romania finalized the Bucharest - Cernavoda highway segment, of some 151 km, in 2007.
