Romania’s car park reaches 7 million vehicles in 2016

Romania's car park reached a number of seven million motor vehicles at the end of 2016, of which some 5.4 million were passenger cars, according to data from the License and Vehicles Registration Department.

Compared to 2015, the number of motor vehicles increased by 400,000 last year. The number of registered passenger cars rose by about 317,400 in 2016 compared to the previous year.

Motor vehicles include cars and other type of vehicles such as vans, tractors, trailers, motorcycles or scooters. Romania had 5.4 million registered passenger cars and 1.5 million other vehicles in 2016.

The car park is still old, with over 3.1 million passenger cars being older than 12 years. Of them, some 2.3 million are older than 16 years and 1.1 million were manufactured more than 20 years ago.

Bucharest had some 1.1 million passenger cars and 300,000 other vehicles, including motorcycles, in 2016.

Romania’s motorization degree remains the lowest in Europe, with about 246 cars per 1,000 inhabitants (at a population of 22.2 million, according to data from INS on January 1, 2016), while the EU average is 569 cars per 1,000 inhabitants. The motorization rate at global level (including under developing countries) is 180 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants.
