07 September 2012

A new center right political alliance is hoping to defeat the current ruling coalition in Romania. Leaders of the Center Right Alliance announced the name of their new political party and their symbol. The group will be called the Right Romania Alliance and is the result of an agreement between the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), together with the Christian Democratic National Peasants Party, the New Republic Party, the Right of Center Civic Initiative and the Christian-Democratic Foundation. The party also includes former PM Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.

The Right Romania Alliance's visual symbol is a blue heart on a white background, similar to the European People’s Party's logo.

Aurelian Pavelescu, president of the Christian Democratic National Peasants Party has also announced that the established Ethics Commission of the new group will be conducted by Monica Macovei from the PDL together with Theodor Stolojan, who previously served as a Prime Minister, the literary critic Alex Stefanescu from the New Republic Party, Stefan Vlaston, currently a teacher and Smaranda Vornicu from the Right of Center Civic Initiative.

Also, the leaders of the Right Romania Alliance revealed that next week the alliance protocol will be put into its final form, as well as the platform, which establishes the technical mechanisms of the alliance’s functioning and the criteria involved into designating the candidates on the lists.

According to Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, quoted by Hotnews, the newly formed alliance represents : “a promise that we can get over whatever separates us and find ourselves inside the territory of the same values and principles.” He added that the main purpose of the alliance is to promote politics “addressed to the Romanian citizen that does not take into account group interests and emphasizes our society's current needs: unity and a brighter future”.

The alliance was formed as a reaction to the ruling Social Liberal Union (USL), which brought together three Romanian parties: the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Conservative Party (PC). The Social Democratic Party and the National Union for the Progress of Romania have recently formed the Center Left Alliance.

Vasile Blaga, president of the Democratic Liberal Party asserted that the alliance is supposed to function “at least until the elections”, according to Mediafax.
