Romania's Child's Pose fails to land spot on foreign film Oscar shortlist
The winner of this year's Berlin Film Festival, Romanian film Child's Pose was not nominated for the short list for an Oscar for foreign film.
The Romanian feature length film was among the Hollywood specialists' favorites in the Oscar - or the Academy Award - race, with Hollywood Reporter having included it along with three other titles among its big favorites.
Nine feature length movies made it to the short list for the best foreign film, out of a record number of 76 proposals this year. Danish film The Hunt, Italian La grande belezza, German Two Lives, Hungarian The Notebook, Cambodian The Missing Picture, The Broken Circle Breakdown from Belgium, An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker from Bosnia and Hertzegovina, and Omar from Palestine were short listed for the Oscar.
The nominations will be announced on January 16, and the Oscar awards will be given on March 2, 2014.
Calin Netzer’s film, titled Poziţia Copilului in Romanian, premiered at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Golden Bear award.
The film tells the story of a wealthy mother who uses her connections to try and stop her son from going to jail. It features actors Luminiţa Gheorghiu, Bogdan Dumitrache, Florin Zamfirescu, Ilinca Goia and Nataşa Raab.
It is the third film by Netzer after the multi-award winning “Maria” in 2003 and “Medal of Honour” (Medalia de onoare) in 2010.
