Romania's Coalition for Family wants public subsidies for abortion cancelled

29 May 2017

Romania’s Coalition for Family (CpF) group of NGOs, which last year gathered three million signatures to change the Constitution’s definition of family with the support of the Romanian Orthodox Church, has published on its website a set of 50 public policy measures on family, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The 50 measures are the result of a public consultation launched in 2015 on family issues.

The document proposes a series of measures such as the reduction of taxes for married couples, the abolition of public subsidies for abortion and contraceptive means, the reduction of VAT on hygiene and care products for children up to 3 years old.

CpF wants the creation of a dedicated structure within the Labor Ministry, which is called the State Secretariat for Families (SSpF). It also wants an Institute for Family Studies or an Institute for Families (IPF) through the collaboration between state institutions and non-governmental structures.

The state should organize in partnership with family associations campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of family and marriage. The law should be amended so that indecent advertising for common products and services will be banned, according to the document.

CpF also asks for the cancellation of public subsidies for abortion and contraceptive means. The funds should be targeted instead to maternal health services. Public housing should be available for young families for maximum ten years. The families should have the possibility to buy these apartments.

Family associations should be present at all stages of institutionalized decision-making process, including in deciding the school curriculum and the content of school books on moral-value education.
