Romania's crops this year to exceed last 5 years average

Romania has a good agricultural year in 2011, with an average production per hectare above the five-year average for most crops, while wheat, barley and potato are well above last year's production, according to a MARS Bulletin report.

Due to favorable weather conditions in most regions and dry weather in July, the average yield of wheat will be of 3.46 tonnes per hectare, 23.5 percent more than last year, and 33.9 percent above the average of the last five years. In the case of maize, production per hectare will be 3.86 tonnes, 5 percent lower than last year, but 20.6 percent above the last five years average, while for potatoes, the production is expected to grow with 12.4 percent compared to 2010.

Spring barley will grow by 17.3 percent compared to 2010, and by 12.9 percent over the average of the last five years, while production of winter barley will be 3.13 tonnes per hectare, with 8.4 percent more than last year, according to the report.

Turnips production will remain to a level similar to the one last year, and sunflower crop this year will be 2.4 percent lower than in 2010.
