Romania’s debt to EU countries for medical services exceeds EUR 160 million

Romania owes over EUR 168 million to EU countries, as well as to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, for the medical services Romanians received in these countries by end-2012, according to a document of the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), quoted by local news agency Mediafax.

For medical treatments abroad, Romanians mainly chose countries such as France, Italy Austria, Germany and Spain, while the countries less preferred by Romanians were Liechtenstein and Estonia. Some of the insured Romanians received medical treatment in Cyprus, Malta, Iceland and the Scandinavian countries.

Romanian holders of the European Health Insurance Card can receive emergency medical care during their temporary stay in EU countries, as well as in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.
