Romania’s demographic time-bomb: Number of newborns constantly lower than number of deaths

12 January 2015

Romania lost more than 100,000 of its people in the last two years due to natural decline. In the first eleven months of last year, the natural decline, which is the number of newborns minus the number of deaths, was 46,000, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

Almost 183,000 were born in Romania, from January 1 until November 30, 2014, but meanwhile 229,000 people died, INS data shows. The trend is similar to that registered in 2013, when 192,600 were born and almost 250,000 people died.

Annually, the number of newborns in Romania is about 20% lower than the number of deaths. This is generally called a demographic time-bomb, as the number of older people is constantly growing, while the number of younger people who must support these older people and basically work to pay their pensions, is declining.

Romania’s resident population went down to under 20 million people last year, according to INS. The population over 60 was 4.63 million people, while the population under 20 was under 4.2 million people.

Romania’s resident population has also declined in the last 20 years due to emigration, as a few million people went abroad to look for work and better life conditions.
