Romania wants to set up its largest online library, with over 550,000 cultural items, books, images, audio and video footage.

The Romanian Government has put the project up for public debate. The library would cost some EUR 10 million, mostly EU money. It would be accessible on the website Culturalia.ro and should be ready in about three years.

Romania is thus trying to reach a European target: the country should have had at least 780,000 cultural items in its national digital library by 2015. Romania only has 180,000 such cultural items stored on Europeana.eu. Romania’s Culture Ministry sees it as a major cultural target.
