Romania's DNA accuses Tax Agency of not recovering prejudices

28 September 2015

Romania’s Tax Agency ANAF should have seized EUR 310 million following the final court sentences in the files investigated by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) but ANAF hasn’t done anything to recover the money in the last eight months, said DNA chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi.

This amount would allow the state to double the doctors’ salaries, Kovesi added in a TV show on Thursday.

“We, as prosecutors, have frozen the goods and values, they only need to execute them,” said Kovesi, referring to ANAF.. reports local Agerpres

“I wonder if the procedures applied to individuals who don’t pay taxes can’t also be applied to these persons who have a final sentence.”

The damages arising from cases investigated by DNA, which received final court sentences in 2014, amounts to EUR 150 million and not to EUR 300 million, ANAF replied on Friday.

“It is deeply unfair for the Tax Agency to be pointed out as the single responsible factor for the low recovery degree of the prejudices,” reads an ANAF press release.
