Romania’s e-commerce could double until 2020

08 June 2017

Romania’s e-commerce will exceed EUR 2.5 billion this year and has the potential to double its value by 2020, according to estimates of the Association of Romanian Online Stores (ARMO).

Although Romanians use social networks and video calls intensively, they are reluctant to make online transactions, with some of the lowest levels in the EU.

“Online commerce can grow over a solid digital infrastructure and a population with good digital skills,” said AMRO executive director Florinel Chis.

Romania ranks last among the EU member states in terms of digitization and the progress registered in recent years is rather slow. However, the country has very good prospects of growth in the next period due to the measures to develop the communication infrastructure, according to a recent report of the European Commission. The report looks at the progress made by member states in the area of digitization.

Romania is part of the low-performance group of countries, with Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Poland, Cyprus, Hungary and Slovakia. At the opposite end, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands have the most advanced digital economies in the EU.
